Importation of Long Grain White Rice
The STC started the importation and sales of Long Grain White Rice (LGWR), also known “as Ration rice”, after its creation in October 1982. In the early 1990’s imports of LGWR amounted to approximately 60,000 MT by STC. Over the years the quantity imported of LGWR has decreased. Currently around 24,000 MT is imported annually. The procurement of rice is carried out through open international bidding exercise every three months.
Quality of the Rice
Initially, STC imported LGWR with 35% broken (‘brisure’). The high percentage of broken in the rice imported was gradually brought down to 25%, then 15% and since 2011, STC is importing up to 5% broken, hence ensuring a high quality of LGWR.
Storage of the Rice
The stocks of LGWR are stored in STC’s dedicated warehouse.
Availability of the Rice
LGWR is imported in 25 Kg bags, however to ensure its accessible to the consumers, in 2014, STC introduced bags of 2.5kg of LGWR.
